Scanning

You flip through an accounting report to find a particular set of data. This is scanning. 

You open the classified section of a newspaper, find the automobile section, and then mark a few cars within your price range. This is scanning. (2)

As I was going to St. Ives,

I met a man with seven wives,

Each wife had seven sacks,

Each sack had seven cats,

Each cat had seven kits:

Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,

How many were there going to St. Ives?
